not what I thought - just regular old 'jingle bells'
By KFM
I was brought to this link thinking I was getting the Andrews Sisters version of Jingle Bells, and since there is no way to see a sample of this music, I went ahead and paid the 2$. Viewed it on my kindle and found that it's just regular jingle bells, not what I wanted.

Reissued to coincide with the release of the movie version, a controversial novel, banned in Ireland in 1936 for its frank depiction of lesbianism, follows an Irish woman who becomes involved with a fellow expatriate in Spain. Movie tie-in.

From Library Journal
When this novel was first published in Ireland in 1936, it caused a sensation because of its "frank depiction of lesbianism." Amazing! Those reluctant to note progress in combating homophobia need only read this novel to realize how far we have come. Melodramatic, overwritten, and sexually tame by contemporary standards, the book charts the course of Mary Lavelle, an Irish beauty looking for adventure before settling into marriage. As nanny and English teacher for three pampered Spanish girls, Mary tastes independence and unleashes her skepticism about conventional social mores. Yet, in the end, Talk of Angels tells a very old story about a woman punished for her audacity. Beloved Irish author O'Brien offers a compassionate portrait of young, working-class women, but her allusions to needed social changes pose no real challenge to sexism, racism, classism, or heterosexism. Recommended as historical artifact.?Eleanor J. Bader, New Sch. for Social Research, New York,

From Kirkus Reviews
The skilled prose of Irish author O'Brien (18971974) transmutes the material of a conventional coming-of-age tale (``banned in Ireland in 1936 for its frank depiction of lesbianism'') into a rich, absorbing study of character and culture. It's 1922, and Mary Lavelle, the 22-year-old daughter of a widowed doctor in Ireland, is quiet and seemingly conventional, yet she has two qualities that are bound to attract notice: her startling beauty and her yearning to become an independent wanderer. Mary is engaged to nice-but-dull John MacCurtain, a demobilized soldier now working as shipping clerk. John cautiously insists on waiting for marriage until he has a good income, and so Mary, feeling fondness but no great ardor for her fianc‚, decides to make use of the time to become a governess in Spain--a then traditional occupation for rootless Irishwomen. She finds work tutoring the daughters of a family headed by the aristocratic Don Pablo Areavaga, whose marriage--complicated, sexless, but not unloving--is explored in depth. Despite initial homesickness, Mary soon takes to her charges, who include the vain, gregarious Pilar and the spirited, amusingly precocious Milagros. With her youth and looks, their new governess provokes comment in the spinsterish community of Irish ``misses,'' but she nevertheless finds friends in Rosie O'Toole, a spunky eccentric, and Agatha Conlon, an austere, mysterious semi-recluse. As Mary develops a taste for bullfights and an infatuation with Spain in general, she comes to find answering John's daily letters a chore. Events reach a crisis when she meets Don Pablo's married son, Juanito--while, at the same time, Agatha is developing her own illicit passion for Mary. Passive and impressionable Mary is sometimes a frustrating heroine, but O'Brien writes with a striking grace and acuity that illuminate not only the landscape of but the complexity of the people living in it. Spanish Love Dance
By A Customer
This is a beautiful story. 1936 was a bit before its age. For a female Irish writer to write a book that even hints at a lesbianism was probably beyond the ability of the Irish Catholic establishment to deal with in that era. However, that is such a minor part of the novel, that it is really mistitled with this new title "Talk of Angels." Discussion about the sexual orientation of a minor character greatly distorts the stark beauty of the characters, Spain, and the inner story which O'Brien tells so well. I understand that the new title replaces the originally published title of "Mary Lavelle." But the angel passage and the lesbian angle are so minor, that I would probably opt for something associated with the climax like "Spanish Love Dance." The strength of this work is the exploration of the inner characters. The main character of Mary Lavelle, her beauty, her vulnerability, and the options between uncertain romance and unromantic certainty. We root for Mary to make love a romantic choice rather than simply an ecomonic security issue as so many women over the last centuries have been forced to make. The characters of the father and her lover are also well drawn and filled with their own special quests. As important as any of the characters is Spain itself. How lovingly is it described, more alluring than a travel trailer or vacation brochure. The society of the other nannies with their squabbling creates a strong reality in which we can see these women operate. The ending left me wanting more in the story. I wanted to know what happened after her return to Ireland. Perhaps that is what a great novel does, leaves you so connected to the characters that they last with you long after the book ends. I believe this book will connect with romantics of both genders, simply because the writing is so fine.

Takes a while to get into, but worth the wait
By A Customer
This lovely coming-of-age story set in the 1920's is beautifully written. I must confess it did take me a bit to get into it (it was somewhat boring until about halfway through), but I'm glad I stuck it out as the story seemed to grab me and stick with me night and day. Mary and Juanito's love story reminded me a great deal of The Bridges of Madison County - hopeless, unrealistic and doomed from the start. A great romance in all respects. Now I must add Spain to my travel wish list!

Enchanting
By A Customer
This was a great book for so many reasons. I loved the emotional changes that the protagonist went through and the colorful people that she interacted with. I also liked the excellent descriptions of Spain and the romantic/political atmosphere. A great read for anyone who is a romantic.

Possibilities: Essays on Hierarchy, Rebellion, and Desire, by David Graeber

“If anthropology consists of making the apparently wild thought of others logically compelling in their own cultural settings and intellectually revealing of the human condition, then David Graeber is the consummate anthropologist. Not only does he accomplish this profound feat, he redoubles it by the critical task—now more urgent than ever—of making the possibilities of other people’s worlds the basis for understanding our own.” —Marshall Sahlins, University of Chicago

“Graeber’s ideas are rich and wide-ranging; he pushes us to expand the boundaries of what we admit to be possible, or even thinkable.”—Steven Shaviro, Wayne State University

In this new collection, David Graeber revisits questions raised in his popular book, Fragments of an Anarchist Anthropology. Written in an unpretentious style that uses accessible and entertaining language to convey complex theoretical ideas, these twelve essays cover a lot of ground, including the origins of capitalism, the history of European table manners, love potions in rural Madagascar, and the phenomenology of giant puppets at street protests. But they’re linked by a clear purpose: to explore the nature of social power and the forms that resistance to it have taken, or might take in the future.

Anarchism is currently undergoing a worldwide revival, in many ways replacing Marxism as the theoretical and moral center of new revolutionary social movements. It has, however, left little mark on the academy. While anarchists and other visionaries have turned to anthropology for ideas and inspiration, anthropologists are reluctant to enter into serious dialogue. David Graeber is not. These essays, spanning almost twenty years, show how scholarly concerns can be of use to radical social movements, and how the perspectives of such movements shed new light on debates within the academy.

David Graeber has written for Harper’s Magazine, New Left Review, and numerous scholarly journals. He is the author or editor of four books and currently lives in New York City.

Creative, Thoughtful and Brilliant
By MSM
Possibilities is really the best of scholarship: an incredibly smart, well-read person putting together different strands of thought to create a unique perspective. Noone writing today is better at explaining anarchism and applying anti-hierarchical, anti-authoritarian thinking to a wide range of subjects; knowing that the author is also an activist only enhances his arguments. Can easily be read (and enjoyed) by non-academics. A truly wonderful book.

brain-melts: 4 and counting
By Marcio Rocha Pereira
Having rushed through the first part of the book (of 3) i feel now compelled to come back and read it again, just to make sure i understood it correctly. Not that the ideas themselves are complicated, but i feel i haven't fully grasped the breath of consequences and interpretations that they provide.

Which is to say: Graeber's book is at once extremely original and extremely relevant. I am pretty sure that i will not be able to face salary-work the same way again after reading his analysis of modes-of-production --- not that i had never heard that a job is a form of slavery, but his arguments make the connection much deeper, albeit more subtle too.

This is no sissy science, trying to make acceptable claims with defensible arguments. Graeber reinterprets classical arguments as he sees fit. But in the end, what we get is actually a clearer idea of society, both more aware of history and more technologically astute than your usual social scientist.

Finally, he claims that his aim with those texts is to keep possibilities open, and i am pretty sure he achieves it.

This book is fantastic. However my issue is how this item is presented. It clearly states this is a 10 PACK of a 28 page book. That IS NOT the case. This price is for ONE book only. You can get one book for a much cheaper price, especially if you are a prime member.

The #1 Bestselling Zen & Counseling Book on KindleDownloaded by over 100,000 people...
Your Unwanted Emotions Are Created By Thoughts, Not By Facts
If your romantic partner isn't cheating, but you think that they are, how do you feel? Hurt. If your romantic partner is cheating, but you think that they love you, how do you feel? Great. If your child isn't injured, but you think that they got hurt, how do you feel? Sad. If your child is injured, but you think they are safe at a friend's house, how do you feel? Fine. If you aren't going to get fired next week, but you think that you'll be fired, how do you feel? Fearful. If you are going to get fired next week, but you think that your job is safe, how do you feel? Great.
When the facts are "good", but you think they are "bad", you suffer. When the facts are "bad", but you think they are "good", you are happy. This demonstrates that the facts don't create your happiness or suffering. It is only your thoughts that create your emotions.
A Powerful 5-Step Process That Can Immediately Bring You More Peace
Do you want to stop living with stress, unworthiness, social anxiety, insecurity, anger, or sadness? It certainly seems as though these emotions are inevitable, and directly created by our circumstances, our situations, and the people in our lives. However, it is possible to discover that all your unwanted emotions are actually created by the thoughts in your mind. More importantly, each of these emotions can vanish in an instant if you just stop believing the thoughts that create them.
When You Don't Believe Words, Those Words Don't Create Emotions
If a random person tells you, "The world is going to end tomorrow", and you believe them, how would you feel? You would likely experience fear. But if you didn't believe them at all, then how would their comment make you feel? You almost certainly wouldn't be emotionally affected. This demonstrates that when you believe someone's words to be true, those words create emotions. But if you don't believe someone's words, those same words don't have the power to create emotions.
The same is true of the words (thoughts) in your mind. If you believe a negative thought about yourself or your life, that thought will create an unwanted emotion. However, if you don't believe that thought, it quite simply won't create the unwanted emotion.
This Book Will Show You How To Disbelieve The Thoughts That Create Your Unwanted Emotions
As soon as you stop believing a thought that is creating one of your unwanted emotions, that emotion will instantly dissolve. As you disbelieve more and more of the thoughts that create your suffering, you will be happier in more and more situations, the more you will be living in the moment, and the more peace, freedom, love, laughter, wholeness, enthusiasm, and gratitude you will experience in your life.
This Book Will Help You To:

  • Experience peace in situations that used to be filled with anxiety and stress
  • Lose the sense of lack in your life, and live with a sense of a wholeness and completeness
  • Put an end to your feelings of unworthiness and insecurity
  • Enjoy less arguments, resentment, and disappointment in your relationships with others
  • Experience the freedom to act how you feel without worrying about others' opinions
  • Live in the moment or live the power of now
  • Experience the fulfillment you have been searching for

About the Author
Noah Elkrief helps people to quickly and easily lose their emotional suffering through 1-on-1 counseling, books, Youtube videos, and blog posts. His book, "A Guide to The Present Moment", has been downloaded by over 100,000 people. Noah runs a video blog at LiveInTheMoment.org that gets over 25,000 monthly visitors, and he has a Youtube channel that has over 100,000 subscribers and gets over 350,000 monthly views.
From the time Noah was just six years old, he started meditating every day. While devoting himself to meditation, Noah also managed to achieve worldly success as he worked on the trading floor at Goldman Sachs in New York, traveled around Europe as a corporate strategy consultant based out of London, and was accepted into the prestigious Mensa society.
In the summer of 2009, Noah's life drastically changed when, in one moment, the vast majority of his thoughts just vanished from his mind. Without almost all of his thoughts, Noah was left with the indescribable experience of peace, freedom, and wholeness that he had always been longing for. As it turned out, this wasn't just a passing experience, and almost all of his thoughts barely attempted to return.
Once Noah's mind had become predominantly silent, any time a new thought entered his mind and tried to create suffering, he could see very clearly how the thought wasn't true. What he discovered was that when he didn't believe his thoughts, his thoughts stopped creating emotions, and they stopped taking his attention. That left Noah with the virtually uninterrupted experience of peace. Noah then left the corporate world to dedicate his life to helping others to live in peace,

Thank you,
By Hilary Franz
As a Social Worker I'm often recommending books to clients. Clients enjoy reading during their journey in therapy as it helps clients feel more engaged in the therapeutic process and we tend to talk about the book in session. I always recommended one book to my clients, when they asked for a book that had changed my life about ten years ago. I only mention this book because until I read Noah's book I had never read another book that has ever come close to making me feel so empowered and filled me with such hope as Noah's book did.

I read Noah's book three times. I did this because I was surprised by the reaction I had when I first read it that I needed to read it again. I had the exact same reaction as I did to the other book I mention above years back. This reaction consisted of feelings of extreme calmness, slow breathing, I was at peace, I felt empowered; positive. But why? How could a book do this? It's just words! What was happening? And then I realized.... Noah's book was literally making me aware of my breathing, of my actual circumstances, of the actual moment and in that particular moment I was enjoying a nice, sunny Saturday at home with my amazing fiancé, with my dog, my life in order, things were great. I was happy. I could enjoy this because I was in the moment and I could see this! Why couldn't I see this always? I began to wonder why it felt short lived as if it was about to go away and I needed to take it all in. I thought about how I speak to clients every day about this exact concept and how I say to them they have to work on being in the moment and feeling the moment more but then I forget to do this myself? Yes, it turns out I did. I'm human it turns out. I have to retrain my brain to "check in" with the moment and myself. Since reading this book I am much more aware of this concept and all of teachings in the book but it is a work in process. Noah's words were inspiring and powerful and helped remind me about what is truly important in life and what it's all about. It's the seconds in life that pass by each day that matter and being present can make all the difference. He helped bring me back to where I'm at peace. His deep appreciation of meditation and his journey to find himself is truly inspiring and I think it will help inspire others. I look forward to recommending this book to clients in the future and will retire the book I mentioned above from this day forward.

Noah- I want to thank you for sharing your story with the world. The therapeautic community thanks you. Looking forward to reading more by you.

This book saved my life!
By skruncher555
I have been dealing with mental health issues for years, most of which were so severe that I couldn't function right. I happened upon this book one night when I was looking for free reading material. This was one of those special promotions; but, it ended up being far more special than just a free download. This book literally saved my life! I discovered, both through this book and recent real-life experiences, that the main point established in this book is the cold, hard truth - "Thoughts, not circumstances, create actions." Since then, I have started thinking more clearly, not to mention the fact that my temper is under control. Best of all, this book helped me get over my ex, three years after we broke up and I had moved on with someone else. My feelings towards my ex were causing problems in my current relationship for a long time. Not anymore.

The missing link I have been searching for!
By GeorgeS
A Guide To The Present Moment has showed me how to live in peace, as opposed to just how to experience peace. The Power Of Now by Eckhart Tolle helped me to experience the wonderful peace of just being here in the Now. And I loved that. But, no matter how hard I tried, I wasn't able to make this peace my normal experience. I would have to make an effort to focus on the present moment. But I definitely wasn't living in the moment.

Now that I have read Noah's book, I can now say that I know how to live in peace, and not just have these momentary experiences of happiness or peace. Through the 5 steps that Noah describes, I have managed to disbelieve a lot of the thoughts that were making me unhappy. So I don't need to focus on the present moment to be happy, I'm already happy because I don't have many of the thoughts that were making me stressed and worried about what others think. If you want more peace in your life, I highly recommend this book.

Review

"Beautiful illustrations. Clinically orientated – lots of surface anatomy, lots of clinical cases, and well explained and annotated radiology cases as well! The excellent short chapter on imaging in the introduction is also very helpful and useful. This book is a really helpful resource for any medical student." BMA Book Awards 2009 - judges comments

"I particularly like the diagrams, which are clearly labelled, not cluttered, and helpfully coloured...this textbook is great. It is well-tailored to students, providing the anatomy information that we need to know. It gets a big ‘thumbs up’" - Medical Student, University of Oxford (review of previous edition) "...explains anatomy in a way that is easy to understand, but also puts the text in a clinical context along the way.The Interactive Surface Anatomy is very useful and well made ― a great example of how Student Consult can provide teaching tools that simplifies complex subjects in a way no book can." - Medical Student, University of Copenhagen(review of previous edition)

"This second edition of the hugely popular Gray’s Anatomy is an indisputable reference tool for the detailed study of human anatomy; suitable, due to its clinical orientation, for both students and all health professionals. The authors come from a strong and diverse range of teaching and clinical backgrounds and have collaborated to update and revise this new edition in order to meet the demands of the modern anatomy course more effectively. Their concern is to make the information accessible, easy to master and, above all, reliable - and to produce an up-to-date book on anatomy that is simple, easy to understand and enjoyable to read."

Excellent REGIONAL ANATOMY text with pretty good drawings
By jacob holton
In short, this is an excellent book when used in the appropriate context. It is meant to be a textbook for advanced human anatomy classes that take a regional approach (i.e. med school gross anatomy); there is no better regional anatomy textbook.

This was the main text for my gross anatomy class, and the professor also recommended Netter's Clinical anatomy (which is rich in clinical content but not the best way to learn structures/landmarks). As a textbook Grays is very good; it has a great combination of descriptive and accurate text as well as fairly detailed pictures. Personally, I wish that it had more pictures with more labeling. The drawings are not as good as Netter's Atlas of Human Anatomy. Netter's Atlas, however, has no text, so I always use these two resources together.

Gray's Anatomy for Students was designed to be a textbook for REGIONAL ANATOMY classes. That is, students take a region (say Head & Neck) and learn all of the important bones, nerves, vessels, organs, and tissues in that region. A systems-based class, by contrast, teaches all of the important nerves in the body (across all regions), then moves on to all of the bones, then moves on to the circulatory system, etc. and not necessarily in that order. This is the best textbook if your goal is to truly master regional anatomy while taking a class. I am not sure it would be very useful for a systems-based curriculum so try to find out what your class involves before purchasing this book. Gray's also contains a fair amount of clinical content which is interesting, but may not actually be useful to you.

If you are considering Gray's for USMLE board review, it is much too dense and contains too much detailed information for that. For board review, get an atlas (I recommend Netter's) and a condensed text like BRS Gross Anatomy by Chung or High Yield Gross Anatomy. See if you can look through those texts to decide which format you like better. Even BRS contains way more info than you need for your boards, but is an excellent tool for mastering gross anatomy. I don't actually know much about the High Yield book. So, Gray's for Students is excellent for a regional anatomy class, not good for quick review. I should also mention that the student consult included with this book is great to be able to access the full text online from anywhere. It also allows you to download many of the images, which could be used for study and presentation.

If your goal is to teach yourself anatomy without taking a class, this book may be a good resource but is NOT the kind of book you read cover-to-cover. You will only be able to learn so much anatomy without taking a class (I tried before taking my class). Better and cheaper resources for self-teaching are the Netter Anatomy Flash Cards and the Kaplan Medical Flash Cards. The Netter cards are by region, and the Kaplan Medical cards are by system. They are both excellent.

good for everything but the head and neck
By dgrebs
this book is great for med school anatomy! great pictures and charts!! (for the most part...)

my ONLY problem with this book:

someone clearly forgot to edit the last chapter on the head and neck. which is a shame because this is one of the hardest topics in anatomy. It is so bad that i have found myself needing to use other texts (Moore's Clinically Oriented Anatomy-awesome book) to make up for it.

For example- some charts list wrong innervations and functions of muscles. In addition to clearly obvious typo's, it is a very poorly organized chapter which jumps all over the place. One second you are looking at the jaw, the next you are in the neck, and somehow you make your way to the nose. It doesn't flow well at all.

To make it even more difficult, in the later parts, when the authors go back to discussing structures in the head, such as the nose and mouth, they tell you to refer to previous pages from the beginning of the chapter. Those pages listed are incorrect, making it all the more frustrating....

and finally, although it will tell you all the functions of each muscle it does not tie it all in well. A simple straight forward explanation of mastication and other very important functions of the head would be very helpful. I know it's an anatomy book, but if it wants to be a clinical anatomy book, it NEEDS to discuss these things, even if it's just a general explanation in a small diagram on the corner of a page.

Also one thing it lacks is a final section on the function of each cranial nerve. All it has is a two page chart at the beginning of the chapter, but Moore's has almost an entire chapter devoted to this with diagrams illustrating everything. Gray's simply has the chart and discusses the nerve when it is relevant to the structure you are reading about. It is extremely annoying to jump around in a 250 page chapter when you are just trying to learn a branch of one nerve. (remember, the pages it tells you to go to are wrong...)

My suggestion- buy the book for everything else, and study the head and neck elsewhere... this book is a waste of time for it. (especially when you have so very little of it in med school)

Great for basic orientation to material - couple with a solid atlas for best results.
By MedStudent1234
This is an excellent book for an anatomy student who does better from reading a text book - as opposed to just looking at the pictures in Netter's or Thieme. It is a real textbook that breaks things down into their simplest components - things like blood supply to the abdomen are broken down simply by developmental regions. It is really helpful for getting big concepts and a basic orientation to the incredible onslaught of vocabulary and spatial memorization that is med school gross anatomy. However, it is a little light on the details. Some things are glossed over and not mentioned at all, most likely for the sake of simplicity. For an undergrad anatomy class, it is perfect. For a med school gross anatomy course, you really need a solid atlas to go a long with it to ensure you don't miss those pesky little details that anatomists love to toss into an exam.

Unfinished Business: Women Men Work Family, by Anne-Marie Slaughter

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE WASHINGTON POST, NPR, AND THE ECONOMIST • “Slaughter’s gift for illuminating large issues through everyday human stories is what makes this book so necessary for anyone who wants to be both a leader at work and a fully engaged parent at home.”—Arianna Huffington

When Anne-Marie Slaughter accepted her dream job as the first female director of policy planning at the U.S. State Department in 2009, she was confident she could juggle the demands of her position in Washington, D.C., with the responsibilities of her family life in suburban New Jersey. Her husband and two young sons encouraged her to pursue the job; she had a tremendously supportive boss, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton; and she had been moving up on a high-profile career track since law school. But then life intervened. Parenting needs caused her to make a decision to leave the State Department and return to an academic career that gave her more time for her family.

The reactions to her choice to leave Washington because of her kids led her to question the feminist narrative she grew up with. Her subsequent article for The Atlantic, “Why Women Still Can’t Have It All,” created a firestorm, sparked intense national debate, and became one of the most-read pieces in the magazine’s history.

Since that time, Anne-Marie Slaughter has pushed forward, breaking free of her long-standing assumptions about work, life, and family. Though many solutions have been proposed for how women can continue to break the glass ceiling or rise above the “motherhood penalty,” women at the top and the bottom of the income scale are further and further apart.

Now, in her refreshing and forthright voice, Anne-Marie Slaughter returns with her vision for what true equality between men and women really means, and how we can get there. She uncovers the missing piece of the puzzle, presenting a new focus that can reunite the women’s movement and provide a common banner under which both men and women can advance and thrive.

With moving personal stories, individual action plans, and a broad outline for change, Anne-Marie Slaughter reveals a future in which all of us can finally finish the business of equality for women and men, work and family.

Praise for Unfinished Business

“Another clarion call from Slaughter . . . Her case for revaluing and better compensating caregiving is compelling. . . . [Slaughter] makes it a point in her book to speak beyond the elite.”—Jill Abramson, The Washington Post

“Slaughter’s important contribution is to use her considerable platform to call for cultural change, itself profoundly necessary. . . . It should go right into the hands of (still mostly male) decision-makers.”—Los Angeles Times

“Compelling and lively . . . The mother of a manifesto for working women.”—Financial Times

“A meaningful correction to Sheryl Sandberg’s Lean In . . . For Slaughter, it is organizations—not women—that need to change.”—Slate

“I’m confident that you will be left with Anne-Marie’s hope and optimism that we can change our points of view and policies so that both men and women can fully participate in their families and use their full talents on the job.”—Hillary Rodham Clinton

“Slaughter argues that the current punishing route to professional success—or simply to survival—is stalling gender progress. . . . [Her] important contribution is to use her considerable platform to call for cultural change, itself profoundly necessary. The book’s audience, then, shouldn’t just be worried womankind. It should go right into the hands of (still mostly male) decision-makers.”—Los Angeles Times

“Slaughter should be applauded for devising a ‘new vocabulary’ to identify a broad, misclassified social phenomenon. And she is razor-sharp on outlining the cultural shifts necessary to give caregiving its due. . . . By putting these issues on the agenda, Slaughter has already taken an essential first step.”—The Economist

Her book will spark a national conversation about what we need to do to live saner, more satisfying lives.”—Katie Couric

“Unfinished Business is an important read for women and men alike. Slaughter shows us that when people share equally the responsibility of caring for others, they are healthier, economies prosper, and both women and men are freer to lead the lives they want.”—Melinda Gates

“Important. Revolutionary. Unfinished Business insists we recognize a simple truth: Human life requires space for caring for others—during childhood, illness, infirmity, and everything in between. And societies that consider caring as simply a ‘women’s issue’ are fundamentally broken and unhappy. Anne-Marie Slaughter has written the instruction manual for our next cultural transformation.”—Atul Gawande

“Anne-Marie Slaughter has given us a blueprint for the future in which women truly have freedom to choose. They can be leaders at the workplace, and they can be leaders at home, at any point in their lives. Unfinished Business paves the way for women and men to be equal partners in America’s cultural and economic success by accessing 100 percent of our brainpower and creativity.”—Kay Bailey Hutchison

Less Can Be More

During the 2014 Super Bowl, Cadillac ran an ad that was meant to be a celebration of American workaholism. It showed a clean- cut fifty-something white man with blazing blue eyes walking and talking his way through his mansion while extolling the virtues of the American work ethic. “Other countries, they work, they stroll home, they stop by the cafĂ©, they take August off. Off. Why aren’t you  like that?  Why  aren’t  we like that?  Because we’re crazy, driven, hardworking believers,” says the guy, who looks like a car- toon version of a one-percenter, to the camera. The moral of the ad: If you just work hard enough, avoiding vacation and “creating your own luck,” anything, including the ownership of a $75,000 car, is possible.

The  ad drove me crazy. The  man was so smug and so com- pletely out of touch with what I consider to be the real values that Americans have traditionally  proclaimed and tried to pass down to their children. Yes, Europeans and others often criticize Amer- ican culture for being materialistic, but when Thomas  Jefferson described humankind’s “unalienable rights” in the Declaration  of Independence, he took English Enlightenment philosopher  John Locke’s “life, liberty, and estate” and substituted “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” And as the behavioral psychologists tell us, happiness is more likely to be found in the pleasures of human connection  and experience—a good meal, a play or movie or sporting event, a bouquet of flowers or a bottle of champagne— than it is in an endless catalogue of possessions.

I wasn’t alone in my reaction. One reporter wrote, “You know what really needs attention?  What working like crazy and taking no time off really gets us[?]” It gets Americans to the grave earlier, it’s made us more anxious than people in other developed coun- tries, and it’s created  a group  of people more  disengaged from their jobs than in countries with more leisure time.
In the end, it was New Yorker writer Jeffrey Toobin who made the most damning argument  against the commercial. As we were talking about it, he pointed out that Cadillac was disparaging the vacation-loving Europeans  in an effort to sell luxury cars to a wealthy U.S. audience who prefer German BMWs and Mercedes. Last  I  checked,  German   workers  get  a  mandated   minimum twenty days of vacation every year.
It’s that simple. German  workers work at least two weeks a year less than American workers do and yet produce better  cars. Perhaps  that is because German  managers still subscribe to the empirical findings that led Henry Ford to establish an eight-hour workday in 1914. When Ford looked at in-house research, he realized that manual laborers were finished after eight hours of work a day. After he cut hours, errors went down, and productiv- ity, employee satisfaction, and company profits went up.

We actually have a growing body of data in support  of the proposition that working less means working better. According to much  more  recent  research,  people  who work principally  with their brains rather than their hands have an even shorter amount of real daily productivity than manual laborers. Microsoft em- ployees, for instance, reported  that they put in only twenty-eight productive hours in a forty-five-hour workweek—a little less than six hours  a day. Futurist  Sara Robinson  found the same thing: knowledge  workers have fewer than  eight hours  a day of hard mental labor in them before they start making mistakes.

This relationship between working better and working less holds particularly true in any job requiring creativity, the well- spring of innovation. Experts on creativity emphasize the value of nonlinear  thinking  and cultivated randomness,  from long walks to looking at your environment in ways you never have before. Making time for play, as well as designated  downtime,  has also been found to boost creativity. Experts suggest we should change the rhythm  of our workdays to include periods in which we are simply letting our minds run wherever they want to go. Without play, we might never be able to make the unexpected connections that are the essence of insight.

Powerful insights on a very important topic
By Just Me
First off, this book is coming from someone who is very career oriented. High performance and high income appear to be quite important to Slaughter. That said, I think she has done a good job of stepping out of her own perspective to take a wider view, and her insights are valid across our culture, not just for the “career woman.”

Slaughter looks at how caring for others is undervalued in our society and how everyone would benefit (career women, working women, stay-at-home mothers, men, and children) if this was corrected. She looks at many ways in which this can be achieved. She looks at other cultures which do place a higher value on care. She looks at how business, government, and individuals can help place more value on care.
By care, Slaughter is referring to more than child care. She also looks at elder care and the many types of charitable giving. She looks at how increasing the value of care is part of expanding the benefits of the feminist movement. There is more to feminism than women doing what men have traditionally done.
She looks at the benefits of not only changing our expectations of women, but our expectations of men. Including what men do in the home. She looks at how men typically parent differently, and why women should accept this as a valid parenting method.

Part of the book, which may be pointless to those of us who are dedicated career women, looks at how “the majority of Americans are mired in a 1950s mindset when it comes to assumptions about when and how we work, what an ideal worker looks like, and when to expect that ideal worker to peak in his career. Men who came up through the old system and succeeded in it simply find it very hard to believe that their businesses could flourish any other way.” Here, she is largely referring to the business career ladder and how motherhood (or other care-giving) tends to derail a career tract rather than just delay it. She looks at how the focus on walking the walk is often more important than actual productivity. Useful insights for those interested in this, but not for everyone. This seems to have turned many people off from the book, but this is only part of what the book is about.

Overall, Slaughter offers well rounded coverage of the topic of how care giving and income earning intersect. It is a deep and insightful look and offers practical information as well as food for thought.

Because Amazon isn’t offering a look inside this book (at least at the time of this review), here’s the contents:
Part 1: Moving Beyond Our Mantras
1 – Half-Truths Women Hold Dear
2 – Half-Truths About Men
3 – Half-Truths in the Workplace
Part 2: Changing Lenses
4 – Cash and Care

7 – Let It Go
Part 3: Getting to Equal

Honest, creative, and insightful.
By Ladybug
Anne-Marie Slaughter was Director of Policy Planning under Secretary of State Hillary Clinton--but she's most familiar to me as the author of her controversial Atlantic article, "Why Women Still Can't Have It All." The woman has some seriously impressive credentials, and I was excited to hear what she had to say about the oft talked-about subject of work/family balance, and I was curious to see how her thoughts stacked up against other books on the subject, such as Overwhelmed: How to Work, Love, and Play When No One Has the Time, Thrive: The Third Metric to Redefining Success and Creating a Life of Well-Being, Wisdom, and Wonder, All Joy and No Fun: The Paradox of Modern Parenthood, and Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead.

Amazingly, Unfinished Business adds something new to the discussion. Slaughter's ideas are refreshing and insightful, and I also happen to think she is spot on. Slaughter's strongest point is that there is powerful and ubiquitous discrimination against caregiving in the United States. Fifty years ago, women wanted out of the home. They wanted to have freedom to pursue their own goals, while also having the opportunity to support themselves. And over the past half-century, they've more or less accomplished this goal. Obviously there is still progress to be made, but there is no denying that women are better off than they were several years ago. They are better educated, more independent, and largely more self-supporting. But, as Slaughter says, "In the long quest for gender equality, women first had to gain power and independence by emulating men." They may have proven that they can do "men's work," but, unfortunately, what was once considered "women's work," (i.e., caring for children and the home) is still not valued in our society.

Traditionally, we talk about kids and work/life balance as if these are "woman problems." But Slaughter argues that having the time and flexibility to provide care--whether to our kids, parents, or friends--is a freedom that everyone, man or woman, should have. Moreover, people should be respected and rewarded for engaging with and taking care of their families--for, say, taking paternity leave or adjusting their schedules in order to attend a child's play.

In fact, I love how Slaughter sees the next phase of the women's movement being a men's movement, where men fight for and ultimately achieve the same range of choices that women have when it comes to care-giving vs. breadwinning. Imagine if men could be accepted, truly accepted, as the lead parents at home, without judgment or condescension. How freeing that would be for both women and men alike!

Slaughter ends the book with several in-depth and creative ideas for creating workplace environments that are legitimately family-friendly. There is little here that is concrete or immediately implementable, but I thought she gave some good jumping off points.

Overall, I loved Unfinished Business. I'm so happy to see more high-powered women writing books like this, books that honestly examine the barriers people face when they try to do their jobs well AND still be present with their families. Talking about these issues is the first step to genuinely addressing the problems.

A good premise drowned out by the author’s insufferably elitist perspective
By Malvin
“Unfinished Business” by Anne-Marie Slaughter regrettably joins a long list of feminist writings where a good premise has been drowned out by the author’s insufferably elitist perspective. To be fair, Ms. Slaughter is an exceptional woman who has achieved great things as an educator, analyst and public servant. Unfortunately, Ms. Slaughter’s reticence to speak truth to power dilutes her book’s message; making for a listless and uninspiring journey for reader who have the fortitude to muddle through its 200+ pages.

It's not that Ms. Slaughter doesn't has a story to tell. Ms. Slaughter left a prestigious government assignment to care for her family during a time of personal struggle. The experience led to a high-profile magazine article “Why Women Still Can’t Have it All” which in turn led to this book. Reading about the author’s struggles is without a doubt the best part of the book. Let me be clear: I have nothing but respect for the author and her courage to do what she felt was best for her family.

Regrettably, Ms. Slaughter’s personal revelations become grist for 11 chapters on a subject that working class people have always known: namely, that balancing work and family life ain’t so easy to do. Something usually has to give.

It’s not all bad. Ms. Slaughter recognizes that men’s nurturing potentials need to be respected and supported in a society where women continue to make substantive gains in the professional world. The author is correct when she says that language matters, the crisis in education is rooted in issues of inequality, and that more women in positions of power can help. This much is (more or less) true and it’s nice to hear a person of Ms. Slaughter’s stature lend her voice to these assorted critical issues.

The problem is that Ms. Slaughter’s ivory tower worldview makes it difficult for her to make common cause. Chapters such as ‘Planning Your Career’ might be just fine for those 1% of students who have had the privilege of attending an Ivy League university but seems wildly out of touch with the needs of the many young graduates who can barely afford their student loan repayments. Similarly, Ms. Slaughter’s advice that women should selectively shop for the best employers who offer flexible workplace policies seems myopic at a time when so many young people are underemployed in dead-end jobs or exploited as unpaid interns.

Ms. Slaughter writes breathlessly about a few corporations who have adapted flexible workplace rules. However, she doesn’t explain how or why we should expect such enlightened policies to become the norm in a cutthroat market economy. While suasion might indeed open doors for Ms. Slaughter's consulting practice for the relatively small number of businesses who prefer Harvard graduates, there doesn't seem to be a seat at the table for ordinary workers in the trickle-down world of enlightened corporate paternalism that Ms. Slaughter seems to imagine.

On that point, Ms. Slaughter seems to run wildly off track when she enthuses about the rise of the so-called sharing economy. Inexplicably, Ms. Slaughter fails to appreciate that technology is a tool of capital accumulation; not social empowerment. Inexplicably, the author simply says she presumes that government will provide benefits for the casual laborers of the sharing economy. But can anyone doubt that the powers accrued by deep-pocketed technology entrepreneurs will pose a severe challenge to her tepidly progressive political agenda?

In the end, by positing that logic, good intentions and enlightened policies alone can prevail in the absence of a strong social movement to agitate for change, Ms. Slaughter’s well-intentioned book achieves very little.
