Darkfever, by Karen Marie Moning

MacKayla Lane’s life is good. She has great friends, a decent job, and a car that breaks down only every other week or so. In other words, she’s your perfectly ordinary twenty-first-century woman. Or so she thinks…until something extraordinary happens.

When her sister is murdered, leaving a single clue to her death–a cryptic message on Mac’s cell phone–Mac journeys to Ireland in search of answers. The quest to find her sister’s killer draws her into a shadowy realm where nothing is as it seems, where good and evil wear the same treacherously seductive mask. She is soon faced with an even greater challenge: staying alive long enough to learn how to handle a power she had no idea she possessed–a gift that allows her to see beyond the world of man, into the dangerous realm of the Fae….

As Mac delves deeper into the mystery of her sister’s death, her every move is shadowed by the dark, mysterious Jericho, a man with no past and only mockery for a future. As she begins to close in on the truth, the ruthless Vlane–an alpha Fae who makes sex an addiction for human women–closes in on her. And as the boundary between worlds begins to crumble, Mac’s true mission becomes clear: find the elusive Sinsar Dubh before someone else claims the all-powerful Dark Book–because whoever gets to it first holds nothing less than complete control of the very fabric of both worlds in their hands….

From Publishers Weekly
Drawing on elements from the paranormal world that bestseller Moning (Spell of the Highlander) created in her earlier romances, this suspense novel takes readers on a darker journey, one dominated by the search for a powerful Faery magic and bereft of the romantic magic Moning's fans have come to expect. When MacKayla Lane, an ordinary young woman, travels to Ireland to track down her sister's murderer, she is sucked into an extraordinary world filled with ancient secrets, vampires, assorted Fae nasties and other tough-to-kill beings. In the process, Mac learns of her own unusual talents and finds an unlikely mentor in the wealthy and mysterious Jericho Barrons. Moning's newest foray contains suspense and plenty of setup. Indeed, this reads like a fragment of a larger story, an introduction to character and place that, while entertaining, skims the surface. But it's a compelling world filled with mystery and vivid characters, and this, combined with the hint of sparks between Jericho and Mac, will stoke readers' fervor for Bloodfever, the next installment. From Booklist
MacKayla "Mac" Lane is a small-town southern girl living a life of suntans and shopping. All that changes when her sister dies in Ireland and a cryptic message on Mac's cell phone raises disturbing questions about the nature of her sister's death. Mac follows the lead to Dublin and the strange life her sister led, on to the darkly dangerous book-dealer Jericho Barrons, and a burgeoning war with deadly Fae that humankind doesn't even realize has begun. Time-travel-romance maven Moning reshapes her Celtic lore for a radically different and engaging new dark fantasy series. Mac's first-person narrative is more than point of view; it's a true recounting of how a sheltered young girl grows to accept the role fate has dealt her. And while moments of sexual awareness hint that a relationship between Mac and Jericho could complicate matters in the future, wisely there is no full-blown romance here to distract from the complex introduction to Moning's new world. I like Karen Marie Moning and have several of her books
By Amy L Galyean
I like Karen Marie Moning and have several of her books, this is not one of my top ten. Darkfever was an average book with a murder/mystery appeal. The story doesn't end with this book and you will have to buy the next book to find out what happens next. The book flips from first person "in the moment" to first person "telling a story" which took away from mystery, character, & was inconsistent. Will I buy the next book? eh, probably not but I will look into other Karen Marie Moning books that appeal to me more.

Highly Recommend

I read a recent release book, Hero by Samantha Young, and after the ending Ms. Young writes that she wanted her dark, cold but wonderful male lead character to reflect the personality and charisma of Jericho Barrons in the Fever series. I had never heard of this writer or her series, but I admire Ms. Young, and I followed her lead, bought the first five Fever books, and I jumped in to the deep end with them. I just came up for air. They're wonderful, Jericho is wonderful. I'm not sure why he does not have his own book, yet? He certainly could carry one. His story, you know, wow. Heavy. A deep rich mine.
I loved reading about him through Mac's eyes. She is a lot of fun and she comes a long way. I loved taking the journey with her.

Good opening to this series.
By Nhya
I was surprised in a good way with this 1st installment of this series. I thought that it was fresh, witty, scary @ times, & completely off the wall.

I like the world building in this and character set up. There isn't alot of places in this one where the story drags. Which sometimes when u are reading in 1st person & dealing with world building happens alot. So I was happy that wasn't the case with this book. Because I was just anxious to find out as much as I could about what Mac was experiencing or stumbling upon, I did find that I would get impatient & a little irritated with her flash backs in the middle of a scene when it felt like something was about to be revealed... Ergo the 3 star rating.

V'lane.. I do not like this dude! Ugh. He irked me with the power he has and the "compromising" positions he would put or leave Mac in.
Barrons.. Don't know what to say about this guy. He's mysterious, sexy, intelligent, & a complete arrogant a**! But he can & will surprise u @ times in this one. I really like how things concerning he & Mac has not taken the predictable course when it comes to this type of genre. This book leaves alot of questions 2 be answered & only makes me eager to know more about this world & the people in it. U will definitely become invested in these characters I promise. I recommend this read.
