Loved it yet still wanted to shake up the heroine!
By bookworm2bookworm
This is the second installment of Ms. Kent's Desire series, and this is Rose's story and the price she pays for giving into her desire to be free of worry for just one warm summer afternoon.

The hero of this story, Captain Wulf Huntington, we met briefly in the first book and I just knew this guy was going to be complex and compelling. He's an Alpha hero to the bone, big, strong and handsome; man who's been through hell while in battle at Waterloo and whose personal story, when he finally breaks down and tells it, will break your heart.

In the Prologue, we meet the young Lady Rosalind Burberry who is tending her own gardens and is having a `fight' with a rose-bush that's too stubborn to budge, and out of the blue a young, strong and way too good-looking man stops by to help her out with it. Both are immediately taken with each other, regardless of her married state, which of course he knows nothing about. Talk about sexual tension!

Wulf is on his way to Lord Burberry with an errand and coming upon this beautiful woman who is flirting with him and is desirous of his `full' attention is what he feels something he needs to cleanse himself from all the carnage he'd witnessed from the battles he's been into, and Rose feels that after many years of celibacy in her married life, it's something her soul just had to give into, to prove that she's still a woman. Neither is aware that the price they'll be paying for that afternoon would be high and the memories would be with both through the next five years of their life.

Once more Lavinia Kent goes all out in her characterization of these two very stubborn, very strong and very passionate people. I loved them both and yet I wanted to strangle Rose! No, I'm not going to tell you why. You'll need to read the book to find out why.

There's so much I want to `blurt' out about this book, but if I start `gushing' I'm sure I'll be giving away too much of the plot! Needles to say, there's a mystery here too, great dialogue and secondary characters of Marguerite, Rose's sister and Tristan, Wulf's friend as well as a comeback of a sort by Lady Smythe-Burke and her nephew, Duke of Westlake.

There's only one thing I found a bit too irritating and it's Rosalind's indecision and constant back and forth in her own reasoning about why she's set on a course of action. I think it just went on too long. That however did not make me enjoy this book any less.

For some reason, I noticed that this book is even longer than the first by a good margin, yet only priced at $2.99. I highly recommend it and hope you'll sample it on Amazon, like I did, and buy it.

I cannot tell you how eager I am to read the last book in this trilogy, `Taste of Desire' which will be Tristan's story. I just read the sample of it and went numb, and I bet you would too! It's coming out in late February and I am glad it's a short month!

Definitely Enjoyed It!

Lavinia Kent's Price of Desire really shines in bringing us strong heroines with a perfect balance of historical realism and modern sensibility. Most Regency romances tempt us with glittering parties, well-dressed men in tight-fitting pants, and alpha male heroes with posh titles. The problem is that if any twenty-first century woman was to actually live in this time, she would find such a life as tantalizing as a straightjacket. Kent's heroines want more--and believably so.

In Price of Desire, the beautiful widow Rose is hunting for a new husband, one who will allow her enough independence to raise her daughter personally (not leaving the job entirely to the nursery) and to manage her own land. These may seem small victories, but back then such interests would be unusual for a well-bred woman. Similarly, Kent's heroes are men who get stuff done. While she has written her share of stories about titled men, her most memorable leads are not the lords but the misters--in this case Major Wulf Huntington, hero of Waterloo and all-around honorable everyman.

Rose and Wulf share a scandalous secret that both brings them together but also pushes them apart. Sometimes, though, the emotional swings happen too fast. In one scene, Rose has good reason to be furious at Wulf--though she doesn't know it, he's innocent of the offence--but her anger turns quickly and inexplicably to passion. (Well, almost inexplicably. He is quite sexy and, of course, good in bed.) Wulf's early feelings of resentment are better developed, which has led some reviewers to empathize better with him than with Rose. Though it is easy to see how great a guy he is when we're in his head, I think Rose's initial reaction was pretty understandable given how domineering Wulf's behavior could be.

Kent is not afraid to have a little darkness in her men, nor does she require virginity in her women (many are young widows). It is nice to have characters with real problems, even some that cannot be easily solved. At one point a loose end cannot be neatly tied up without causing more pain, and Wulf agrees to just live with the situation. It's a happily-ever-after that makes sense--and makes him all the stronger of a man.

Fans of Kent's earlier work will appreciate seeing some of her previous characters make guest appearances, including Violet (Lady Carrington, before she becomes Lady St. Johns) and the wise Lady Smythe-Burke. The latter is a scene-stealer as she guides the protagonists in a subtle-but-devious way that made me laugh out loud. Kent's light touch in writing these scenes is one of the best parts of the book. She does not hit you over the head with the lady's hints or machinations, instead trusting the reader's intelligence.

Kent's Regency world may not be tediously accurate in its particulars, but it is the one you and I would want to live in. And for Wulf, maybe I'd take the trip back in time...

Delightful
By Kath
Loved the story of Rose and Wulf. I find I am a true fan of Ms. Kent's writing and this is the 2nd of 3 of her Desire novels that I've read. The reviewers who complain of a plodding plot or of no plot confuse me, as I feel as if they must be thinking of another book. Kent's writing would do with a better editor at times as there are times where then are grammatical errors, but nothing distracting from the tale and not so numerous to be a problem.

A sub-character in the Desire series is Lady Smythe-Burke and I've come to perk up and eagerly anticipate her interjections in any scene. I'd love Ms. Kent to write her story someday or find that it already exist.

Back to the story. If you like a some passion with your romance novels, Ms. Kent provides it very well. You do not have her lovers on each other every chapter, but the sexual tension is described in vivid and actually more erotic than a '50 Shades of Grey' approach where the act of sex is described in detail. She is a master of capturing how one can feel tremendous, all senses firing attraction to another and then as she works her way to the actually coupling she pulls back on the details in an artful and skilled manner. I admire her handling of this as may be clear.

I found moments of this book were laugh out funny, others that made the heart beat a bit faster and others that made the eyes go misty. This is basically the story of two people learning to trust each other and to love completely.
