Someone once described "His Dark Materials" by Philip Pullman as she gets caught, she escapes, she gets caught again, she escapes again, then she gets caught, then she escapes. This may be true but the real substance of the epic is the how and why.

It is the "how" that holds the story together. We are intrigued with Lyra's ability to plan and lie her way out of trouble. Eventually it is the truth that sets her free.

The "why" she is being sought and the "why" she must go on brings us many conundrums that we not only face in the tale but also in our real life.

Lyra must fulfill a prophecy; however if she becomes aware of her destiny, that destiny may never happen. For those readers who have read Josef Campbell you will recognize the classic Heroine's Journey where a person coming of age must sacrifice the apron strings and face the challenge of adulthood. This includes going into a dark place and confronting an unknown which usually is one's own fears and ego. From there they are reborn to become a fully functional person in society.

Oh, did I forget to tell you that this is a fun read.

I highly recommend the boxed set of His Dark Materials trilogy. After reading the first book, The Golden Compass, the series just gets better. Reviews for each of the books follow:

The Golden Compass (His Dark Materials Trilogy, book 1) - 3 stars
Lyra Belacqua makes the most of her life at Jordan College. It's not typical for a young girl to be raised at the College, but the Scholars take care of her and ensure she learns what she can as she continues to grow up. Though her family is dead, Lyra is never alone. Her daemon, Pan, is always at her side. Lyra is not a fan of structured learning and loves to run wild around the College with her best friend Roger. Like most kids, they make up horror stories to try and scare the other one. The most frightful story though, happens to be grounded in truth. The Gobblers come to town and take children away from their families in the middle of the night.

Lyra's Uncle, Lord Asriel, is highly esteemed among the Scholars of Jordan College. One day he comes to tell them of his adventures and of some dire news. Lyra, not content with being left out, hides in the closet to hear the story. It's then that she learns of Dust and that her Uncle is going North on an expedition. Dust is a particle that appears to enter the world from the Northern Lights. Many, like Lord Asriel, are intrigued by it as it's supposed to be the link to other universes. Others, like the General Oblation Board, are fearful of it; thinking it the cause of original sin and want to destroy it. Lyra is soon thrust into a great adventure of her own, unknowingly caught between the two opposing forces and the lynchpin to turn the tide. She'll have to struggle to find the truth on her journey North and seek the help of witches, gypsies, and armored bears if she's to succeed.

The idea of the alethiometer (compass) was very intriguing. Each symbol has many multitudes of meanings. The number of times the needle stops on the same image relates to the numbered level of the meaning for that symbol. Being able to keep up with that and truly understand all the hidden meanings seems an impossible feat. It's so impossible that scholars have books of all the symbols and their meanings to decipher the codes. But, Lyra is gifted and the compass speaks to her. She inherently understands the intended meaning with relative ease.

This was a fun read. Lyra definitely flys by the seat of her pants and learns as she goes. She doesn't always understand everything, but is slowly able to put together the pieces and figure things out, sometimes too late. It's amazing the lengths both opposing sides are willing to go to in order to assure their victory. This book was definitely an adventure. I look forward to the next book in the trilogy and to seeing what other fantastical adventures to new worlds await.

The Subtle Knife (His Dark Materials, book 2) - 4 stars
The Subtle Knife picks up pretty much where The Golden Compass left off. At the end of the previous book, Lord Asriel had created an opening between worlds. Lyra passes through and finds herself in what appears to be a deserted world and a deserted city called Cittagazze. She walks through the streets and enters a cafe and no one is around. Cittagazze is a place where Specters steal the souls from adults, so all surviving adults have fled. Children can't see the Specters and are left alone until they get old enough.

While scouting the city, Lyra finds Will Parry, a boy without a daemon. He is also an outsider to this new world, fleeing his own after accidentally killing a man. The man was ransacking his house, looking for old correspondence between his mother and father. Will stumbled upon the new world by accident, but it has him wondering about how his father diassapeared so many years ago. Will is determined to find the truth about his father and Lyra is happy to help him. Together they venture between worlds and discover an object of great power, the subtle knife. Lyra continues to be pursued by Mrs. Coulter and Will continues to be pursued by the people that want information on his father. They will both have to be smart and brave to succeed in their quests.

I really enjoyed this book, even more than The Golden Compass. I think it has to do in part to the fact that I was already immersed in Lyra's world. I knew about daemons, the alethiometer (compass), and Dust. In this book, we start out in the human world, Will's home world. We get to see him discover a new world and Lyra, a person with a daemon. We get to see Lyra discover a person without a daemon and all the oddities of the human world. As they discuss and learn about each other, it makes clear what some of the terms in The Golden Compass meant and their relation to the human world. There continued to go be great adventure in this book and great danger. I enjoyed learning of the subtle knife and it's importance. It will be interesting to see what The Amber Spyglass has to add to the mix. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed The Golden Compass.

The Amber Spyglass (His Dark Materials, book 3) - 4 stars
In this final installment of His Dark Materials trilogy, Lyra has been captured by her mother, Mrs. Coulter, and is being kept in a perpetual state of sleep. In this sleep trance, Lyra can talk to her recently deceased friend Roger. She swears that she'll come and save him in the land of the dead.

Will is on a mission to find and save Lyra from her mother. He travels far and wide between worlds to discover where she is being kept and devise a plan to save her. But, Will is not the only one looking for Lyra. The Church has decided she must be killed at all costs, before she can be tempted and return evil and Dust to the world. They have sent a priest assassin to kill her. The Gallvespians, a small but deadly people, are also looking for Lyra on Lord Asriel's command. They are to find her and return her to Lord Asriel if possible. Lord Asriel is amassing an army from many different worlds to take on Metatron and start a war for the Kingdom of Heaven.

Dr. Mary Malone (from Will's world) has discovered a way to speak with the Shadows after following Lyra's advice. They tell her she must leave her studies and help Lyra. Mary follows the Shadows' advice immediately and finds herself in another world. This world is unlike any other seen thus far. It appears peaceful and more unmolested than most. The Mulefa are the dominant species instead of humans. They are most similar to elephants in our world, but are much differently shaped. They have no spines, are able to traverse the land on wheels, and are a highly intelligent people. They welcome Mary into their world and seek her guidance on what to do about Dust leaving their world.

Will and Lyra both have a strong sense of what they feel is right and wrong and what needs to be done. They will continue to fight with all their strength to do what is right and won't let anyone stop them, even if it means going to the land of the dead and the awful price that must be paid to do so. Their adventures are tough and will cause them to be wise for their years, with many lives lost, and the discovery of the true meaning of Dust.

Another great read in the trilogy. I love seeing the different worlds and getting to see the different people and cultures that have arisen from different circumstances. The mulefa's world seems more serene than most and more in tune with nature and the natural world. I was amazed at the adventure through the land of the dead and the discoveries made there as well as the capacity of Lyra to love. The mysteries that have been discussed throughout the books are nicely answered in this one. My only quibble is that both Will and Lyra seemed to grow up too much for their years by the end of the book. They definitely had to as a result of all they have been through, but I felt it was a bit much for their ages. All said though, it was a good and satisfying ending to the trilogy.

This was a gift!

Someone I know had the first on a wishlist. So as a surprise and since once you read the first you want to read the rest I got the set for the price of 1!!!! The shipping was a bit slow and I was getting a bit worried that it wouldn't get here on time. I go the shipping notice but following the tracking was impossible but it was not updated at all. It took over 2 weeks and It just recently updated to delivered. So the item was in good shape for used but the shipping really was what brought this item down.

About the Author

Chris Fellows has been a ski instructor, trainer, and clinician for more than 25 years. An 8-year member of the prestigious Professional Ski Instructors of America (PSIA) national Alpine team, Fellows sat on the board of directors of PSIA-W for 15 years, where he has also served as the vice president of education. In 1994 Chris cofounded and now directs the North American Ski Training Center, a worldwide adventure ski school that offers 28 courses at 18 resorts around the globe yearly.

Fellows has worked closely with the Center for Health and Sports Performance and is an advisor for several snow sport industry companies, including Rossignol, Nordica, Fischer, and Patagonia. Off the slopes, Chris contributes to Ski magazine, Tahoe Quarterly, Professional Skier, and Sierra Sun. He also has contributed instructional videos to the Ski Channel and Ski.com.

A central Massachusetts native, Chris is a member of the American Mountain Guides association and has guided rock climbing, mountaineering, and backcountry skiing throughout Sierra Nevada, New England, Wyoming, Chile, Nepal, and Canada. He lives in Truckee, California, with his wife, Jenny (a former collegiate ski racer), and their three children.

Highly Recommended

No matter your skiing ability, style or terrain preference, "Total Skiing" will improve your skiing if you read it as a guide to complete ski training. It is both comprehensive, and straight-forward, and helps you not only work on your on-mountain skills, but also all-around conditioning you can use during those dreaded times when it's not snowing. It's as useful to me as a world-ranked competitive skier as it is in my role as Head Freeski Coach of Squaw Valley Freestyle Team, where I use both the great drills included in "Total Skiing" and the fitness testing and progressions to teach proper fundamentals to the future rippers who I coach, and to keep myself strong and prepared throughout the year. If you're looking for a great program to take your skiing to the next level, you'll find it in Chris Fellows' rounded approach... or, there's always Squaw Freestyle.

Total Skiing

This book belongs in the library of every serious PSIA ski instructor or any skier who is interested in improving skiing skills. It is loaded with detailed information and presented in a manner that is easy to grasp and understand. A refreshing approach bringing material together in a comprehensive building block approach.

Chris builds a skiing performance pyramid that starts with a base of functional movement. He then works through ski fitness, ski technique, and at the peak of the pyramid - ski tactics.

Understanding, assessing, and targeting flexibility and strength are discussed as they relate very specifically to ski movements. Learn a grading system, to quantify results. Determine if work is needed to raise your level of cardiovascular, muscular, or power and agility as they relate to ski fitness. Use Chris's system for periodical year round self - assessments.

Next, Chris goes on to explain essential techniques; neutral stance, engaged stance, leg turns, parallel turns, and carved turns.

This is followed by a section on tactics; reading terrain, applying turn shape, speed management, line choice, steeps, bumps, chutes and gullies, back bowls and trees.

Then Chris explains how to categorize your skiing as it relates to the performance pyramid - underpowered, overpowered, under skilled, or combined. A very interesting methodology to target strengths and work on weaknesses. This is followed by a section on equipment needs. Very useful information about getting dialed into a performance boot fit - this information is often overlooked and undervalued in importance. It receives proper emphasis here. He then provides background information on which skis are most suitable for various types of terrain.

Next section, complete with pictures is devoted to dry land training, drills and exercises - all specifically targeted for ski movements - develop and improve your strength and agility.

Now it is time to "click in" for on snow technique and tactics drills - all stemming from his work out programs - again complete with pictures.

Last sections of book tie chapters together into a year round training package; preseason, in season, post season.

If you only have a couple of Alpine ski books on your book shelf - this should be one of them.

Comprehensive Approach

This book presents a comprehensive approach to improving your skiing. It builds on functional movement evaluations and presents on and off snow drills to address individual needs. This book takes the science of ski training to higher level. It also provides a ski specific training program. It provides the tools for those of us that are always stiving to reach a higher level of performance in a sport we love. I would recommend this book even if you already consider yourself an advanced or expert skier. It is also especially suitable for intermediates wanting to advance.

OMG, I loved this book and can't wait for another book from Lori!
If you love hot sexy Dragons wanting a mate, you'll love this story! It has the right amount action, sex and intrigue!
Jasmine never wanted to be a Dragon's mate, she has had Nightmare from childhood about the winged beast! The last thing she wanted was to be mated to one, but when a treaty between Human and Dragons was reached, she was offered as a volunteer, only she was sacrifice, she didn't volunteer. so she did the only thing she could do is Run!
I am not going to give you anymore than that, Hopefully you'll read Lori book, I found it to one of though books, I couldn't put down until I finished!! let's just say it was a late night!!

I enjoyed this book but there were a couple of things that could've made it better. A little more info/backstory about the dragons, SPOILER-what the heck happened to the girl in the cage at the end? Did they let her out, who was she, is she going to end up with her own pair of dragons that will make what she's been thru at least a little bit worth it? Sorry, I just hate not having important bits wrapped up in a book and not knowing if there's another one on the way with further info.

I love a strong woman who is prepared to protect herself from what life throws her way- even if that just means having an accessible escape hatch. The world is created with dynamics and politics that have been going on long before the story began for us. But, Lori Whyte has no problems bring us in and not leaving the reader feeling like there is a whole level of this world that we are not privy to. I can wait to read more!!

About the Author
Rick Daniels, R.N., Col. (ret.), Ph.D., administers clinical practicum courses in acute and critical care nursing. Currently an associate professor at Oregon Health and Science University, School of Nursing, Daniels has taught nursing in associate, baccalaureate, and graduate schools, as well as R.N. degree completion programs. He has also taught many adult health and illness seminars and has presented at numerous national organizations, including forums for nurse educators. Throughout his accomplished career as an educator, Daniels has kept his clinical practice current as a Colonel in the United States Army, Army Reserves, and National Guard, retiring in August 2012 after 28 years of service. An active researcher, Daniels has received four successive fundings with the Department of the Army to implement health promotion programs with National Guardsmen. The author of multiple textbooks, he also publishes in nursing journals and holds membership in numerous professional nursing organizations, including Sigma Theta Tau and the American Nurses Association. Daniels obtained his bachelor of science degree in nursing from the University of Oregon Nursing School, his master of science degree in nursing from the University of San Diego, and his doctor of philosophy degree in nursing from the University of Texas in Austin.

Michael D. Coe is Professor Emeritus of Anthropology at Yale University. His books include The Maya, Mexico, Breaking the Maya Code, Angkor and the Khmer Civilization, and Reading the Maya Glyphs. He lives in New Haven, Connecticut.

Stephen D. Houston is Dupee Family Professor of Social Sciences at Brown University. His most recent book is The Life Within: Classic Maya and the Matter of Permanence.

Excellent update, but needs a style refresh

This 9th Edition of Coe's The Maya, now co-authored with eminent Maya scholar Stephen Houston, is a major improvement over the last several additions. Houston's expertise in Maya writing means that the book is up-to-the-minute on many issues relating to Classic Maya religion and courtly life, and the chapter on "Maya Thought and Culture" has been almost completely re-written to reflect Houston's expertise on the subject. Similarly, this edition rolls in some major recent discoveries about Preclassic Maya civilization which are most welcome, and an appendix has been added listing the names of all known Maya rulers and the dates known for their reigns, which will be helpful for those trying to puzzle through references to specific characters in Maya history.

Houston's contributions are also noteworthy for incorporating bite-size summaries of the ideas laid out in his own books for specialists, including brief treatments of morality and personhood, gender roles/norms, and the material world that will be familiar to readers of, say, The Memory of Bones, The Classic Maya, or The Life Within.

The illustrations are wonderful, and there are even more of them than in previous editions. Some images that are exceedingly hard to find have been worked into the present edition, which alone are worth the cost of the book.

My only real gripe is that the style of the prose is, at times, distractingly dated. In part this is because portions of the text are unchanged (or barely changed) from the original 1966 edition, at which time the book's target audience would presumably have understood the references to Pilgrim's Progress and been comfortable with the occasional Latinate stylistic flourishes. These days, however, a typical college-aged (or even college-educated) reader is unlikely to find such flourishes helpful or accessible. Some of these, such as a reference to a goddess that is "easy with her virtue" (p. 255) and "dwarves and other malformed people" who comprise "the most bizarre courtiers (at least from our vantage)" (p. 93), are likely to distract or alienate, rather than engage, a younger readership.

That being said, this is still the best book going for someone who wants to do some basic "reading up" on the Maya before visiting ruins or wading into a more detailed treatment like Sharer and Traxler's The Ancient Maya. The 9th edition is a major step forward in terms of its content, and I look forward to following The Maya through many editions into the future.

Great Place to Start Learning About The Maya

The Gold Standard of introductory books about all things Mayan. Coe write with knowledge and authority and does a great job in conveying the depth and breadth of the Mayan civilization. He is especially strong in guiding the reader through various interpretations by historians as well as explaining the ever-evolving scholarship and research about Mayan history.

Not a quick read, but rewarding to the committed reader who wants to get a solid introduction to The Maya.

Well-written, informative and, most importantly, reasonably up-to-date. It gives a thorough overview of the Maya civilization, illustrated with photos, drawings and maps for each period of its development. A 'must-read' for Maya lovers, interesting not only for beginners in this field.

Described as an "obesity warrior" by Time magazine, Dr. Ludwig has been featured in the New York Times and on NPR, ABC, NBC, CBS, and CNN, among others.

It truly works.

I was one of the test subjects for this book and I can fully testify that this is the REAL DEAL. I dropped 34 pounds in the 5 month research phase but what is far more important is that I learned so much about good food and bad food. There is a lot of bad food out there, many we are unaware of. The Ludwigs teach you the differences and how to cook the meals that change your body for the better and for the long term. The other wonderful aspect of their plan is that the battle for a healthy weight is more than just the food aspect. They also teach you about proper sleep and exercise. I fell in love with the after dinner "passeggiatas" with my daughter. That is Italian for "walk".
You will feel a bit overwhelmed in the beginning with the drastic transition from the old stock of food in your home to the new way of shopping, (I have to say that the clean out prep phase was fun and refreshing). Take the time to plan it out and shop on a day when you have a good amount of time. The first shopping trip is like the load-in trip. After that, it gets easier. The benefit of having meals ready on the fly are worth the time it will take to shop, prep and cook. After a short period of time, you get a lot faster.
The bottom line is this, it gives you a true, long term path to overall great health. Here's to your health.

It Actually Works

I am not much of a writer, nor book critic, but here goes. I was one of the lucky individuals who "beta tested" the principles and recipes found in Always Hungry? At first it seemed a little intimidating cleaning out my kitchen and then restocking it after a major trip to the grocery store. Some foods I had never cooked with. But I decided to go "all in" and I followed the plan just like it was outlined. I was so surprised at two things: how delicious the recipes were and how effective the plan was in helping me lose weight. In the first 8 weeks I lost 20 lbs. And this was without strenuous exercise (I did as recommended and casually walked after my evening meal). Once you prepare your sauces and dressings (done on the weekend) the recipes are pretty easy. And I can't tell you how awesome it was to eat chicken again with the skin on! The recipes are just part of our regular cuisine now. This is not a fad or short-term diet plan to lose weight fast. You will lose weight slowly but consistently, and it will stay off. You will not feel deprived, ever (just try the desserts...) The book is easy to read and understand. It's never easy to change, especially having deeply ingrained bad eating habits like I had. But the book was inspiring and motivating and once I jumped in and saw how well the principles worked, cravings went away and the weight started to come off. It worked just like they said it would. It's a good book. One you will want to keep and use forever.

Not hungry anymore!

I'm on Day 3 and will update this review again later, but I already feel compelled to share my experience so far. I am a lifelong calorie counter, but at 5 feet tall by the time I get even remotely close to the healthy weight for my height I "get" to eat about 1200 calories per day. Maybe 200 more if I exercise. The result is that I spend all day thinking about food, how many calories I can have, what I really want to eat (a brownie), and then judge what the scale might say in the morning based on hungry I am when I go to bed. Enough.

I've followed Dr. Ludwig's articles online for awhile now and when I saw that he had a book out I was intrigued to read it. Yes, I am always hungry. Yes, I am addicted to sugar. Yes, I know it needs to stop. I am a SAHM to 2 little boys (5 and 1). In order to make this meal plan work I have to prep food during nap time and at night. I agree with other reviewers that it's very time intensive, but I do feel like some of the items can be purchased pre-made. You don't really need to make your own hummus. Duke's Mayo has no added sugar, so no need to make your own. Plus every Southerner knows this is the only mayo worth eating anyway.

I was shocked at my grocery bill when I bought the pantry staples and food for the first week. However, much of that is not an expense that will be repeated for awhile (like the oils). I guess I like to think of the investment in food (produce and good meats are expensive, we all know this) as cost saving in the long run in terms of my health.

Day 3 and I'm down 6 lbs. 6 lbs! I have not counted a single calorie but know I'm eating much more than the 1200-1400 I am "supposed to" be eating according to the calorie counting plans. I still think about snacks around 3-4pm, but it's nothing like it used to be. I eat my hummus and veggies or trail mix and go on with my afternoon. I am hungry before meal time, but it's a normal hunger and not the result of blood sugar swings because all I've eaten is crap all day. My husband isn't doing the plan with me, but is greatly enjoying the dinners. As far as kids go, the 5 year old is very picky and a work in progress. I typically share my dinner portion with the 1 year old as I usually can't eat it all anyway. They eat their normal diets for breakfast and lunch as I don't feel the need to restrict carbs for very active little boys. If I were truly doing this plan for a family of 4 adult-sized eaters it would be extremely expensive. I'm hoping that once I get into Phase 2 and then to Phase 3 that I can tweak some of my previously made recipes to fit the plan which I think will cut down on cost and time.

I'm off to make something called Tofu Hash for breakfast. I'm a bit wary of this dish, but it involves cheese, sour cream, and avocado so it can't be but so terrible!
