Public Safety 911 Operator

This book has a lot of valuable information. I did take the test, but, I didn't pass because the typing wasn't fast enough. I type 47 words per minute, but, during the test, they throw some curve balls of emergency broadcast on the bottom of the screen while you are in the middle of typing a VIN number to a stolen vehicle. The test I took was CRITICALL. They said to practice typing, typing, typing....and use a phone book. The dispatcher book helped me with the multiple choice questions. The map reading is important as well. Get to know your NORTH SOUTH EAST WEST! Practice memory in phone numbers! I got an 80% on an overall score, but, my typing is what made me fail. I recommend this book highly.

Avoid this

The information given in this book was very basic common sense facts. If you graduated High School or have further education you will not learn a whole lot from this book. If you are looking to test for dispatch you must know that no book will help you prepare much for the test. After buying this book and not wasting my time with the very "common knowledge" information, I passed two of my three dispatch tests. These tests are mainly common sense tests. The best advice I can give you is have efficient typing skills, not just alphas but numerics. Remember, you need to type in vin numbers that are 12 characters long containing both alpha/numeric also license plates. If your typing speed slows even a little when keying numbers in you must practice! Thats what hurt me on the one test I failed. I passed all 14 parts on a computer based test with 90% or better but experienced a dip in typing speed when keying in vin numbers.

I passed critical test for Sherriffs office by using this book!

Great study guide! I PASSED CRITICAL TEST! Book is common sense, but without knowing what to expect and practicing with this book I never would have passed! This book saved my butt! Yea, your going to think this is stupid and blah blah blah.. But once the critical test started I was thinking damn, its nearly identical to the book. Trust me! I completed this book in 2 days and a total of 5 hours. Very quick but its more like a mental game book and fun if your bored and obviously trying to get a job. This book wont prepare you for typing though, and on the critical test you will have head phones on and a voice will talk to you. Then you have to type the VIN # and address she tells you. Its like a typical 911 call. I highly recommend you have a friend talk to you and read you off numbers and etc. You cant replay the voice so you have one chance to get it. Practice your number punching!

Rebalance Your Gut Bacteria, Boost Metabolism & Brain Health

You'll learn why you want to include certain foods and avoid certain substances so you can optimize and reprogram the communication between your body's trillions of gut bacteria and your brain. You'll be surprised to learn the list of compounds that disturb your brain's critical set point: they are in diet drinks, animal products, and household cleaning supplies.

Dr. Perlmutter shares new research about bacterial-derived compounds that are causing dis-ease in children as well. (The section about autism and gut bacteria was my favorite part of the book. Not many authors are sharing natural ways to minimize the bacterial-synthesized compounds that are causing erratic behavior in children.)

Last but not least, Dr. P has new recipes and brain-maker food plans that are not found anywhere else.

This book contains health tips to give you a completely new take on foundational issues, such as weight loss, improved blood sugar control, sharper memory, and balanced behavior in adults and children. It's a great read.

Grain Brain helped me regain health . . .

Dr. Perlmutter's advice in Grain Brain (lower carbohydrates, add healthful fats, eliminate gluten) helped me regain normal blood glucose levels, lose weight, decrease joint pain, get better appearing skin, and more back in 2014. So I am hooked on his writings. I read Brain Maker cover to cover. Probiotics, discussed in Grain Brain, occupy front and center place in Brain Maker, complete with recipes, meal plans, his current view on supplementation, how to give yourself a probiotic enema, and more. The latest research is provided for further reading. Case studies of Dr. Perlmutter's patients who showed drastic improvement after healing their respective gut microbiomes are presented for consideration. Although each case differs, this is very encouraging for people who are facing (or have loved ones struggling with) conditions such as ms or autism.

Very informative and practical reading. As one example, I now know to avoid wheat gluten not only because it can trigger leaky gut and inflammation, but also because I don't want gluten to play a role in LPS leaking from the gut, where it belongs, into systemic circulation, where it can wreak havoc by causing inflammation. So in addition to gluten and absorbed carbohydrate effects, an expanding list of different substances and their collective role in whole body inflammation is put forth in this new book.

On the practical side, chapter 8 outlines key operating principles to heal the gut so the rest of the body can enjoy good health. There are fermented food recipes, and recommended prebiotic foods. I already find fermented foods to aid sleep and decrease anxiety. I have a new appreciation for onions as a prebiotic, and we are consuming more of them. Maybe I will even attempt a probiotic enema at an undisclosed time and place of my choosing!

I'm sure in days and years to come we will have more books coming out, because the gut microbiome is still a wide open field of study.

This book is a life changer!

I listened to the audio version of this book, and as a veterinarian who has studied comparative nutrition since 1966 I was completely impressed. Dr. Perlmutter is right on the button with regard to his conclusions, and they are based on his own clinical experience and on mainstream peer-review papers. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion about nutrition, but when he cites The New England Journal of Medicine and The Lancet you have to be willing to listen.

My own personal experience bears his opinions out totally. A month ago I was so sick I wanted to die. I had insomnia due to inability to breathe at night with nasal congestion, eyes felt like they had sand in them, anxiety and depression, zero energy, mood swings, brain fog, digestive tract problems including cramps and diarrhea, and chronic muscle pains that came and went. After a month on a grain-free diet I am sleeping like a baby, in perfect health, and exercising every night. No more afternoon naps, I am too full of energy. No more nose, eye, brain, muscle, or GI problems of any kind. And, I have lost 5 lbs. to boot.

If you are having any of the problems listed in Dr. Perlmutter's book, give his dietary advice a try for one month. What do you have to lose? Eat veggies, meat, fish, fowl, nuts, and enjoy yourself. If after a month you see no improvement in your medical condition, you have still eaten plenty of good delicious food and improved your health and probably your weight. Nothing to lose but your sickness.

Not Very Well Laid Out

I am not a fan of how the information is this book is laid out. The font is also a bit on the small side making it hard to read. The end of chapter summaries aren't very informative for summing up what you just read. While better than the workbook that goes with it, I am not a fan of either. This was a required text for my medical coding class. The price was great on Amazon and saved me some money. As we're currently buying textbooks for 4 people in our household, Amazon is a great way to shop.

The book was in excellent condition and is very thorough in it's diagonosis of diseases. It is a technical book, however, and is for studying. This is not a "light" read.

A Professor at Penn State Hershey and a Professor Emeritus at Ball State University, he is a Master Certified Health Education Specialist (MCHES). He also serves as the Coordinator of the Division Board of Certified Health Education Specialists of the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing.

 

Brad Neiger is the chair of the Health Science Department at Brigham Young University. Brad has also served in the field within the Utah State Department of Health and the National Health Institute.

 

Rosemary Thackeray is an Associate Professor at Brigham Young University. She has revised the marketing chapter, her area of expertise, as well as the measurement chapter.

My mission: to help you to live your happiest life.

My strategy: I’ve filled the pages of this Instant Happy Journal with what I call “happiness prompters”—a range of motivational quotes, thought-provoking questions, scientific research studies, and soul-stirring philosophical thoughts. Each page’s happiness prompter is meant to inspire you to reflect and focus on where the most joy, appreciation, and love can be found in your day (and your life).

This journal also has fill-in dates so you can reflect and write at your own pace. Feel free to write either in the morning (to set an intention) or at day’s end (to share a reflection).
Many of the happiness prompters are ones I use with my family. For example, in my home we have one of my Instant Happy posters displayed on the inner side of our front door, which we
read every day:

“Something awesome is going to happen today.

I can’t wait to see what it will be.” 

Having this happiness prompter in our faces on a daily basis reminds us to be what I call “awesome seekers.”

Keeping this quote in mind helps us tune into the frequency of awesome—and to perk up and appreciate what’s happy in our day. Being an awesome seeker has been shown to increase happiness—in particular, when the awesomeness sought gets recorded in a journal. In a recent study, University of California researchers divided participants into three groups. The first wrote once a week in a journal about five awesome things they were grateful for. The second described five daily hassles. The third listed five random events. The results? Those in the first journal group reported an increase in happiness, more optimism about their future, and more improvement in health problems than those in the other two groups.

Finding more happiness in daily life

So often in life, we tend to focus on the not-so-positive things. When I saw this book, Instant Happy Journal by Karen Salmansohn, as one of the options for my monthly reviews on Blogging for Books I decided to order it. I figured that when using this over the year, I would be able to mindfully add happiness to my life. Who couldn't use more happy in their life?

This journal has daily happiness prompters to encourage you to reflect on those things in your day or life that bring joy, love, and happiness. I think we all get busy in the day to day life and sometimes forget to think about those things. These daily prompts help you focus on the positive, and that can change your whole outlook on life and benefit you in many ways.

Karen says her mission in putting this journal together is: "To help you live your happiest life." (pg 1) She also says, "...you will train your brain to focus on where the most inspiration, gratitude and joy are to be found." (pg 2)

I think that changing our focus to the happy aspects of life and ourselves is something that can benefit every one of us. We will have more joy in our life and want to share that joy with others.

It's not hard to take 5 minutes each day to think of and write about the daily prompts. A few of my favorite have been: "Every time you thought you couldn't keep moving forward, you did. Appreciate Your Strength", "Prioritize your life around kind, passionate people. Name-drop a few and why you adore them", and "The pain you feel today is the strength you feel tomorrow".

I would recommend this journal to people who are searching for more joy in daily life, or people who need to change their outlook from negative to positive. I think that these daily happiness prompters could benefit just about everyone!

65 Days of Inspiration, Gratitude, and Joy

I’m more than a little obsessed with cute journals (even though I can’t write in them for longer than a week for the life of me). When I saw this pretty little thing on Blogging for Books, I couldn’t resist. It’s so small and happy looking, how could I go wrong?

The nicest part of this journal is that it has prompts. Many journals lay abandoned on my bookshelves, victims of writer’s block. Some days are just not interesting enough to write about! Then you start to feel guilty about not journaling, then you keep procrastinating, then you look at the journal and it’s been too long since you wrote in it and you have to give up.

The Instant Happy Journal has 365 pages for journaling, but they’re NOT PRE-DATED. You get to write in the date yourself. Which means, if you miss journaling on March 3rd, you don’t have to wait until March 3rd of the following year to finish that page- just pick it up where you left off.

The graphics on the journal pages are fun without being overwhelming. I can see myself running out of room for writing on a few of the pages, but most of them look big enough. There are many interesting prompts- “Make a prediction in this journal about something you believe is about to happen. Fold over the corner of the page so you can be reminded to check later whether it came true!” “What made you feel afraid today? What can you say to yourself to increase your moxie and bravura?” “Success is stumbling from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm.”

This is a great little journal for people who just need a reminder to reflect a bit during the day. It’s not too much work and is SO adorable.

The Company You Keep

Karen Salmansohn is a great writer, a great coach, a great artist and an amazing inspirational guide .

What she is, even more importantly, is real. You can feel that truth and up-front honesty in every word she writes.

And that is what Karen teaches us -- how to be real, how to find real, how to choose real, and how to stay the heck away from any and everything that is not real, 'coz all-that-is-not-real only leads to heartache, lost time, and pain.

You'd think this would be something we'd all have learned as kids -- how to find what's real -- but actually, what we've learned is how to buy bulls***. And it's that acceptance of all-that-is-insincere that's had us doubting even ourselves to the point of second-guessing every choice we make. And in fact, it's that uncertainty about what is real and who is sincere that's had a lot of us making choices that have, frankly, screwed up portions of our lives, like our love life, our self-image, and even our relationship to simple things like food.

Well, Karen's not havin' that. She's not havin' it in romance, at work, in friendships and at core: she's not havin' it with the most important thing of all -- our relationship with ourselves.

You will immediately see this insistence on facts-up honesty in everything Karen writes and teaches. But you also see the fierce and loyal love that drives it all. And that's also what Karen teaches us: how to tell what's real and true and good, and how to love ourselves (and respect ourselves) so much that we say, "yes, please, I'll have all that good stuff" to whatever's wonderful, and "Oh, NO way!" to whatever is not.

And, Karen is fun! She and her works are bright and witty. Sometimes, they are outright hilarious. And you know what? We need this. We need the serious, we need the funny, and most of all we need the real and the true and friends, Ms. Karen brings it all.

So that is all I have to say. Karen has benefited me and my life by her works and her generous spirit and example (she walks her talk, folks -- everything she preaches, she has practiced on herself and her own life). I think she, and her work, is great.

And here's why all this matters: you are going to be influenced by, and absorb, whatever and whomever you hang out with and listen to all day long -- and you know that this is true. So it is crucially important that you surround yourself with all that is good and true and real if that is the kind of life you want to have. It's the company you keep, people, that either supports you in finding your way, or distracts you off your path (or worse, encourages you to feel sorry for yourself and eat another pint of ice cream while you weep into your laptop).

My life and my spirit are merrier, happier, and doing better all because of Karen's "company".

I highly recommend you sample Karen's works, and see what great company they, and she, provide.
