Amazing Collection

This second volume in the series has excellent artwork, a great storyline, and lots of action. This is what X-Men is all about. If you like to read and like X-Men, you should have this product.

I like Millar, so I like this.

So sue me, I'm a dyed in the wool Wolverine fan. And after reading "Wolverine: Enemy of the State," that has been further validated for me. What I find is that Wolvie could be "diluted" for a younger audience and not lose any of what makes him great.

I read the back cover insert with a letter from Joe Quesada mentioning that Ultimate X-Men was going to cater to younger readers and to an audience who can't quite follow the current continuity of the regular X-titles. I think that description fits for this comic title. I enjoyed this TPB, mainly because it collected issues that I never felt the need to buy individually every month. Since I collect about eight titles a month, you can see why I feel that way.

Wolverine's back among the X-Men and being hounded by the Weapon X program again, but this time the X-Men are taken captive. This is the first appearance in the series of Nightcrawler, who speaks more German and is a very likable character. We're also introduced to a recurring villain, Wraith, who's lovably evil and a real jerk, allowing his troops to riddle Wolverine with bullets while he's being held captive, just to watch his healing factor make him better so they can start over. I love the speech that Colossus makes where he explains why Wolverine will save the day, only to have Sabretooth walk into the complex a moment later, dragging Logan by his feet, unconscious after they hit him with napalm!

This story features a decent rescue and a great battle between Logan and Sabretooth. No Weapon X/Weapons Plus story would be complete without that. The dialogue is well written in this, as well as the interpersonal relationships. The artwork is inconsistent; the facial expressions are great, but the figures are very cartoony. I also find it a funny indication of the era that we live in that Storm and Jean have body piercings.

One thing I will say about these TPBs of this title is that I would not be able to read them out of sequence. Millar and the new guy, Vaughan, don't seem to believe in providing you with references to stuff that's happened in past issues to keep you caught up.

If you are an X-Men purist, and you don't like stories that vary from things you've already read in Uncanny or untitled X-Men, then leave this on the shelf. However, if you like your X-Men adventures to feel more like the animated series (Evolution) or the first two movies, this may be more your cup of tea.

The Weapon-X Program "recruits" the X-Men

Despite the title and the cover art for this second trade paperback volume in the "Ultimate X-Men" series (collecting issues 7-12), "Return to Weapon X" does not focus on the character of Wolverine. True, he is a key part of the solution for the predicament our Merry Mutants have found themselves in this time around, but Weapon X is now a big time secret government program run under the auspices of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Nick Fury that has a rather impressive little roster of mutants in its service: Juggernaut, Rogue, Nightcrawler, and Sabertooth. Think of them as the government's answer to the X-Men and the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, and that pretty much accounts for all of the mutants belonging to groups at this point in the series.
Despite being on a first name basis with the President of the United States, Xavier's School for Gifted Children is hit by Colonel Wraith and his shock troops, both human and mutant. Now Cyclops, Marvel Girl, and the others will serve the greater good and help the government fight fire with fire (the only good mutant is a mutant with a neural implant). Of course, since this is a comic book, the person in charge of this government program is psychotic and perfectly willing to do anything to do anything to get the job done (or did I mention already that Wraith was in charge?). The main part of the story arc has to do with the X-Men regaining their freedom, but this is also mixed up with Wolverine's search for his past and Nick Fury's search for an illegal genetic operation violating the Superhuman Test-Ban Treaty.
I think that one of the main strengths of the Ultimate comic books is that they emphasize story arcs that take multiple issues (six in this case) so that a dozen issues into the series we have only dealt with two major stories instead of a self-contained episode with a new villain every single month. This should help the well from running dry too quickly. Writer Mark Millar along with Penciller Adam Kubert (with Tom Raney & Tom Derenick) and Inker Art Thibert (with Scott Hanna, Joe Kubert, Danny Miki, & Lary Stucker) are having fun tweaking the "original" X-Men stories and creating some new dynamics (e.g., Storm is interested in Hank McCoy, Nightcrawler does not speak English) so I think that those who have been reading the X-Men since issue #1 of "The Uncanny X-Men" (or issue #1 of "The Giant-Size X-Men") will enjoy the differences more than neophytes and appreciate the way key stories resonant (e.g., Jean Grey is Marvel Girl and not Phoenix when she steps over the line this time around).
"Return to Weapon X" is not as good as the first volume in the series, but it is hard to compete with Magneto when you talking about the X-Men, whichever version of the group is involved. Millar's story is certainly complex enough and you can see all sorts of things being set up for down the road. As long as you are not offended by the very existence of the series, you should find "Ultimate X-Men" or any of the other titles in the Marvel series to be at least entertaining and quite possibility compelling. At the very least, you should be able to appreciate the tweaking.

The stories..though horrifying are true stories that depict what most women are passing through (silently or loudly) in the arms of men that were meant to love them. It was an eye opener for me. Many of the women recognized the abuse early on before the wedding...especially the first lady. Sadly, they walked in, expecting things to change. The writer did her best to describe the horrific details associated with the different stories. It was well written except it had no page numbers. I completed reading it in three hours. It was that captivating.

Whew!!!

The harsh scary realities of violence against women stare at you in the face in this beautifully woven story. I simply love the writing style, however as well written as it was, this poignant novel was not a relaxing read for me but forces one to take a closer look at the questions surrounding gender violence.
I look forward to other books by the author but not as intense please!

This is a good book for all women to read especially young Nigerian girls many of whom grew up in households and environments surrounded by men dominating, intimidating and berating women and thus may not realize until it's too late that this is unacceptable behavior and must be avoided in their future.

Peter Greenlaw is a renowned health and wellness expert, researcher and author of several books including "TDOS Syndrome and Solutions" and "Why Diets are Failing Us." He is the host of The New Health Conversation television series on PBS that features some of the world's leading health scientists, physicians and researchers. Peter has appeared on numerous radio and television shows including Fox and ABC. He lives with his wife and two sons in Denver, Colorado.

Marco Ruggiero is a world renowned medical doctor and researcher. He holds a PhD. in Molecular Biology and is a former professor in Molecular Biology at the Department of Experimental and Clinical Biomedical Sciences at the University of Firenze, Italy. Use your Brains!

I am only 22 and do not truly think about boosting my immune system or different ways to strengthening my body. At this time in my life, I just want to go, go, go! When I began reading this book, though, I realized that it is time to take it into account to taking care of it more now than ever.

I enjoyed the fact that Peter Greenlaw shared his personal battle with Parkinson's Disease. My grandfather and grandmother both battle it on a daily basis, but Mr. Greenlaw proves that taking your body helps in the battle. I learned in this book that a way to do this, is to carefully plan and learn how to listen to your "three brains" which include: your gut, your head, and a microbiome. The author carefully lays out various ways for us to prepare one's body as well as to learn how to listen to it. I began to take notes and am beginning to apply them to my life.

This fascinating book is forwarded by none of than Dr. John Gray of 'Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus' fame and he is here to corroborate that there is more to making relationships work than improved communication-- how about Optimum Brain Function??

Yes, and the guiding raison d'etre is the gut microflora which, it turns out, is the complex organ responsible for the development & functioning of all your other organs & systems. Good news to know! I would love to order this book because I am aware of the brilliant research that Dr. Marco Ruggiero and others are doing with GC-MAF to achieve break-through treatments for cancer, autism, ME, CFS, MS, ALS, etc. I am hoping this will be a summary and continuation of the same path of knowledge.

I am not sure why this paperback is not available anywhere other than Amazon for $473, but as soon as I can get my hands on a copy I will update this review.

It is funny that the glossy summary mentions that "researchers discovered a new organ that had gone undetected for more than 3,000 years in Human Anatomy". In Psalm 90 (or 91) it is written: "... There shall no evil come to thee: nor shall the scourge come near thy dwelling. [11] For he hath given his angels charge over thee; to keep thee in all thy ways. [12] In their hands they shall bear thee up: lest thou dash thy foot against a stone." Maybe King David knew more about the micro-biome that we give him credit for?

A wonderful plan for daily Bible reading

The One Year Bible, New Living Translation, makes daily Bible reading a pleasure because it is an orderly plan that gives the reader a passage from the Old Testament, New Testament, Psalms, & Proverbs to read each day from an easy to understand, but still meaningful, translation (NLT). What is amazing to me is how one day's readings will relate to and enhance the understanding of the passages from the other parts of the Bible for the same day. It took me 15 years to read through the Bible the 1st time, 5 years the 2nd time, and I am now on my 3rd reading. It never gets old, but more precious.

This is wonderful! I have tried many times to read the bible but I always got frustrated because it was hard to read and understand. The way this one is set up is great and it feels a little less overwhelming as far as the thickness goes due to it being seperated into days.

This bible is perfect for my requirements.

I love the New Living Translation second edition for reading the scripture. I much prefer it to NIV, TNIV, or the Message. For study, I would refer to several versions, probably the NLTse, NRSV, NIV and NAB.

I love the One Year format. I have tried many times to read the whole bible but always failed. This bible is organised so that each day's reading is marked by the date. Each day's reading is in easy bite size chunks of the Old Testament, New Testament, Psalms and Proverbs. Therefore, even if I miss a day or two I can jump right back into it by going to the reading for that day.

I love the "New Believer's" commentary. I am not a "new believer" but I could sure use a refresher. Each reading from the Old and New Testament has a brief introduction. Then each day's reading has a short commentary focusing on an important point a Christian should know.

I love the hard cover because it allows me to read in bed. I previously used the Catholic version of the NLT One Year Bible in paperback. The cover was so flimsy that it was hard to hold the book open while reading in bed. However, the paperback version would have been fine if I were reading elsewhere.

The font is large and clear so I am able to read without strain. Overall quality of the book and paper is good.

lot of catching up to do

I agree with some of the chefs who are afraid we might forget about DINING... I have to confess I was thinking about 'soilent green' at some point. Anyway, browsing the book I realised that those chefs in this book were using the same tools I worked with in 1984 - 1985. Furthermore, after a week, I realised there was also a CD included with the receipes (none found in the book), so it seems I'll have a lot of catching up to do.

The Future of Food

I thought I knew who the good and great chefs of the world were. I read an article about Ferran Adria in February and I thought to myself, "How did I miss this guy?"
The food is beautiful, unusual, curious, unique, and definately showing what food can be. I'm an aspiring chef, and I've never been more impressed with a book in all my life. I have 75 cookbooks, this is the one I would keep if I had to have only one. Forget Escoffier, forget Larousse, this is the direction I want to see food go. Foams, hot jellies, using gellied consumme as pasta dough, hot maynoaise, candied olive oil... the list goes on.
The recipies are not meant to be for the home cook, but anyone interested in new techniques, this book explains it all. Most of the food isn't very appealing for the Western pallate. This book, for me at least, is a wealth of information about cooking rather than recipie replication. He's very detailed in his explainations, and the book is organized very, very, very well.
Ferran Adria is more interested in making new things with foodstuffs than making a million dollars. I think Adria is the most creative and interesting chef working today, he's constantly creating new ways to eat food. Looking through this book is like having a glimpse into the future when it comes to cooking. Joel Robuchon says he's the best chef in the world. Paul Bocuse says he's the most exciting chef today. Those are some powerful words coming from some of the best chefs to have ever worn a toque. What's even more impressive is that they still say he's the best after he's claimed that the French are all washed up and don't know how to cook anymore.
Get this book, it's the start of something big.

If cooking, dining, eating, food as an art form, etc., is part of you life, then this publication has no current equal. It is the expression of food as an art form at its highest level. My next goal would be to go to Spain and experience this myself. It is obvious; the tremendous amount of work and dedication this was to put together.
